The Honeybee

This year was the first year that the 1st and 2nd graders competed in the school spelling bee.  Several months ago each first and second grade class had a class spelling bee which resulted in one winner who would advance to the finals.  Ava won for her class!  She was so excited and had been excited about participating in the finals.  The school decided to have two separate bees.  The Honeybee was for grades 1 and 2 and The Bumblebee was for grades 3,4, and 5.  Today was the finale!  Ava placed 5th out of 8 contestants!  That's great!  She missed the word spare.  She was a little upset but Claire, Emily and I were there to comfort her.  Emily is her best friend and each contestant got to bring one friend to watch them.  Of course Ava chose Emily.

As an aside, Emily and Ava have such a sweet friendship.  Emily was lowering her arms in the "calm down" motion when Ava was on stage and I could see Ava relax.  When Ava missed her word and had to sit down, Emily put her arm around her and said, "At least you won our class."  Such sweet encouraging words from a sweet, precious girl!  Ava sat in my lap for the rest of the spelling bee and received a medal for 5th place.  Great job Ava!!
