Due to the time change (Hawaii is six hours behind Georgia), we were all up very early. We had eaten, dressed and were on the beach by 8:00 a.m. This beach was unlike any beach I had ever seen. The ocean had lots of lava rock in it and was not ideal for swimming but was perfect for snorkeling. I was glad we brought two sets of snorkel gear with us.
Kelly, the girls, and I spent some time walking through the soft, thick, clear sand and looking for sea creatures at the water's edge. The water was so clear that you could easily see straight to the bottom. We saw sea cucumbers, sea urchins, and crabs. There was even a rare monk seal sleeping on the beach! Beach workers were around the seal putting up poles and tape to make a safe area for the seal. As the seal moved, they moved the safe area. I had read in my travel book that monk seals were rare to see, but we saw one the first day. I just knew this trip would be awesome!

As we walked down the beach a little more there was a man made beach area that was perfect for kids. All three girls played in this area for a long time. They ventured to the lava rock around the area to see crabs and we even had a visitor...the monk seal! The seal would dip into the ocean, swim around the snorkelers and return to the beach to nap.
After spending a couple of hours on the beach, the girls were eager to head to the pool. There were several pools at the resort but the girls got in the biggest one to swim. Once they finished swimming, we went up, ate, and decided to ride around and explore.
The scenery was absolutely gorgeous! The entire island is so lush and covered with beautiful trees, flowers, and plants. We rode until we saw a sign for the Spouting Horn. We stopped to see the sea spew through holes in the lava rock. When the waves would come in, the water would shoot up like a geyser.
We continued driving westward toward the town of Waimea. We came to an overlook for the Waimea Canyon and decided to stop and take in the view. Hiking the Waimean Canyon was on our list for the next day but we were glad to get a sneak peek of the beauty we were sure to see.
