Once a student enters the fourth grade, a large amount of opportunities to be involved in school clubs and activities open up. Students are not really involved in many events until the fourth grade so this has been a fun year for Ava so far. And if you know Ava, she wants to be involved in everything! She came home a couple of weeks ago wanting to participate in 4H. I signed the papers allowing her to participate and she decided to run for President! She wrote her speech by herself, organized her ideas for her poster and has been so excited about her campaign. Since my school has a poster maker, I told her that I would take care of that part but I would let her preview the poster before it was printed. In addition, my media clerk suggested cutting out clovers with "Vote for Ava" on them and pass them out the day of the election. It was such a cute idea! The day before the election she had her poster, her clovers with safety pins to pass out, her speech, and her outfit planned. We even had to make a special trip to the mall for her to get pretend glasses. She said she wanted to look "presidential"!
The results of the election did not turn out the way we hoped (she lost by one vote in a run-off election), but she was tapped as the reporter for 4H and she is very excited about that! Even though she did not win the election she learned some very important lessons from this experience: how to work hard for what you want, how to deal with disappointment, and to never, ever, give up!
